Remembering Gray Alexander Amphlett

November 13, 1941 - November 23, 2021

“I Dug Life” - Grandad Gray

Home: Welcome

After a lengthy battle with cancer we are sad to announce the passing of Gray Amphlett, shortly after reaching his 80th Birthday.  He is preceded by his son Duane and survived by his wife Ibi, son Eric, daughter-in-law Kara and granddaughters Avery and Addison.

An affinity to the ocean was imprinted on Gray as a young boy growing up in New Zealand. He was born in Morrinsville and spent most of him time in Hamilton before moving to Canada in the late 60’s. His Canadian journey started in Edmonton. Realizing how cold Edmonton got in the winter, he headed out to Vancouver where he met his wife Ibi. This is where they raised their two sons, Duane and Eric.

Many family moments were shared on the waters at English Bay and throughout the coastal islands. His passion for sailing starting with his hand built Mirror Dinghy and grew into part ownership of a 26” Columbian sailboat. His adventures included a voyage from Mexico to Vancouver (via Hawaii).

Gray made his living as a self employed excavator operator and eventually transitioned to the role of instructor with Operators Training School (OTS). He was a skilled operator and was thrilled to be able to share his skills with the numerous students whom attended his classes.

After retiring from working the machines, Gray’s focus switched to helping with the landscaping around the Gillis Walk complex, golfing and playing in two bands. Gray particularly enjoyed brass band music where he was able to play a variety of horns.  He was able to remain active in these activities right up to the late stages of his illness. Gray returned to Edmonton in June, 2021 to live with his son Eric and family while he completed his cancer treatment and care.

As per Gray’s wishes his ashes will be interred with his son in Burnaby, BC at a later date.
